A2 is one of the most common first licences for bigger bikes. Here is what it means in practice and what to check before buying.
The A2 power limits
Under EU rules, an A2 licence lets you ride a motorcycle that has:
- a maximum power of no more than 35 kW (about 48 hp),
- a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg,
- and is not a restricted version of a bike whose original power is more than double the permitted figure.
Quick maths: for a 200 kg bike, 0.2 kW/kg would allow up to 40 kW, but the 35 kW cap is stricter. For a 150 kg bike the weight ratio is the limit: at most 30 kW.
What does this mean when you buy?
- Check the maximum power in kW and the kerb weight. We also show an estimated licence category based on the technical data, but this is for guidance only.
- If a more powerful model has an A2 (restricted) version, it must be registered and certified as such. Ask in the shop which version you are getting.
- An A2 licence can later be upgraded to category A. Always check the age and practical requirements with the exam centre or the authority, under the current rules.
Weight and seat height matter for beginners too
Power is not the only thing: you also need to be able to hold the bike upright when it is standing. Sit on it in the shop: your feet, the centre of gravity and the reach to the handlebars decide whether you will feel confident.
